Interior Design Advice?

We are going to re-arrange our living room and purchase some tables with storage. All the toys and junk that come along with a two year old are getting out of hand! I am horrible at home design. Do any of you have any favorite resources for interior design? Specifically I'm trying to figure out how to arrange the furniture and TV. We have a fireplace on one wall, a bank of windows on another wall and the rest of our room is pretty much open. I'm stumped, which means I'll probably put it off for another seven years...

That's a doozie. I personally think it's arranged the best way you can with the space you have. My suggestion--Have Scott buy a nice big flat screen to hang over the fireplace, and build a window bench with built in storage along the wall with the window (this is where Jake comes in!). Leave the furniture as is. It looks fine.

We were thinking about putting a flat screen above the fireplace...

Mounting the tv above the fireplace is a good solution if you have enough space - but your living room may be too narrow to accommodate that setup. Love the idea of the built-in window bench - I've seen something similar done with Ikea cabinets: http://aubreyandlindsay.blogspot.com/2009/11/making-seating-bench-in-kitchen.html. I have a number of favorite interior blogs in my reader if you need some inspiration!

I don't have a solution. But don't put your t.v. above the fireplace. It's too high. Everyone seems to do it, but it's really not advised. I also realized that our living room can really only be arranged the way it is, unless I go with two couches. What about the ottoman (leather) tables that have storage in them (some times cubes)? And, do watch IKEA, their furniture is smaller scale and might give you some ideas. Sorry, dont' think I was much help, but I did have an opinion.

I would agree with Ms. Mayhem about not putting the TV above the fireplace. We did that two houses ago and it makes your TV our focal point which I don't like, and it's too high. I think it's better to mount a flat screen lower on the wall with a small storage cabinet/entertainment system below it. We have this one from IKEA that I love!.

I'm not sure what your living room looks like, but one thing we did for our TV was purchase a taller stand with storage for it to sit on. We got it from Pier One and it's actually meant to be a sidebar/buffet for a dining room, but we were able to cut out small holes in the back for all the cords to go through. It's perfect because there is a lot of room for storage and we can close the cabinet doors if we don't want to look at everything. And, it's narrower than most TV tables so it doesn't take up as much space in your room.

My solution is always looking through Pottery Barn catalogs and finding the same, less expensive objects at Pier 1 or online. I've also got really desperate and just ordered the PB items. My kitchen looks like PB threw up on it. Creative, no. Easy- yes.
