The kids were doing school from home so I had the news on quietly in the kitchen. I wanted to watch the footage of congress certifying the election. Typically this process is ceremonial, with very little drama. It's the last step in finalizing any presidential election. Several Republicans were expected to reject the certification in some of the states where the election was very close. I wanted to see what transpired. While the joint session of congress was taking place to certify the election President Trump was holding a rally for supporters and continuing to claim his fake narrative of the election being stolen from him. Just after noon, the news footage switched to outside the Capitol where you could see protestors approaching the building, pushing through barricades getting little resistance from security and walking into the Capitol. Protestors were loose in the Capitol while lawmakers were evacuated from the building. After several hours of mayhem, the Capitol was cleared and secured and Congress reconvened. Around 3 a.m. the election was finally certified.
