Twice Bitten, Once Shy

Evy was bitten twice by her friend Colin last week. As the teachers describe it Evy is the alpha female in the room and Colin is the alpha male. They are best buddies but also are jockeying for domination of the room. They're frienemies (friends who are enemies). I was hoping Evy would not become a biter--she only has 3 teeth. However, yesterday I was informed that Evy tried to bite one of the kids so she got a time out. On the way home last night I asked Evy about her time out and she just looked out the window, ignoring me. Little stinker.

Cheese

We're trying to teach Evy to look at the camera and smile. You can see how well it's going...

Food for Thought

Before Evy we ate "healthy"--but that was pretty much defined as low calorie and low fat. I didn't really care about it being organic or local. But just like everything else after kids--eating got more complicated. I became more interested in learning about how our food is manufactured. I read Michael Pollan's book In Defense of Food. I've watched the documentary Food, Inc and tried to become more educated on the subject of food. It's really amazing, how much we don't know. Today our food is mostly manufactured--not grown.Today our food is mostly fortified with scientific compounds that are similar to the natural nutrients found in real food. If you're the slight bit interested in this topic I would encourage you to read more. It's really interesting! Because I'm feeding a little one now and I'm concerned about the chemicals going into her body we've switched things up a little bit in our house. Yesterday, we became members of our local co-op and plan to start purchasing organic dairy and meat. Some of you might think I'm a liberal nut job, others might wonder what's taken me so long.

Before the Rain

The weather was beautiful last weekend (cool and rainy this weekend). We took advantage of it and went to feed the ducks. Unfortunately, I think we were the 75th family to feed the ducks because the ducks weren't very hungry. Oh well, Evy had fun throwing the bread at them and ate the remaining bread herself. This is also a shot of our tree before the rain. This is the best it has ever looked! It must like dry, warm springs!

Deliciousness

Scott fondly remembers going to Donutland for cherry doughnuts after church with his mom and grandma. This memory put us on the hunt for a Donutland and cherry doughnuts! Yesterday, Scott was driving through Cedar Rapids and picked up 4 cherry doughnuts. He saved one for me and one for Evy. Last night before dinner we all had a treat! Gotta break the rules every once in a while! Evy loved it and kept saying "Nummy!"

Moo!

A local nursery had a free petting zoo last weekend. Evy liked the cows!

Life is Busy...

As Scott and I contemplated our overloaded summer schedule I could tell the blood pressure was starting to rise. Each of us has a week out of town for work, weekend board meeting, birthday parties, fun travel to see friends, a girls weekend, a boys fishing week--pretty much the entire summer booked up. Fun stuff. But, overwhelming when layered over 2 full time jobs and full time household work. Then I remembered a quote from Ms. Mayhem "Life is busy. Get over it." Scott said, "You know, that might just be the right attitude." And, I think it is.

Poor Sucker

On my way to work this morning I noticed some poor sucker had been stopped by a cop. As I passed the poor sucker I noticed it was my husband. I always accuse him of driving like an old man so I don't believe the story that he got caught going 41 mph in a 25 zone. Because he happens to be a nice poor sucker he got off with a warning.

Coolio

On our way out the door for a walk Evy grabbed these shades out of her basket and popped them on. Too cool for school. Obviously.

Baby Burrito

In the evenings Evy likes to strip down to her diaper and be wrapped up in her blanket. We call it the Baby Burrito. Evy has started to say Baby Burrito which makes it even funnier.

First Time Out

Well, here's a milestone for the baby book. First time out. Evy's daily activity sheet from daycare included the following note today, "Evelyn had a rough morning and didn't want to share any toys and was fighting with another kid. She was sat in a little time out to cool down. It helped and her afternoon was a lot better!" I don't have any more details because I was late picking her up and her lead teacher was gone by the time I got there. In Evy's defense, she started coughing last night and was grumpy when I picked her up. I'm guessing she's getting sick. Ha--already making excuses for my kid's poor behavior :-)

So Tempted...

Sesame Street Live is coming to town next month. I am sooooo tempted to take Evy. However, my "inner common sense-fun killer" is telling me to wait. Tickets would be about $25 each. Those are for good seats--which I think we would need to keep her attention. If we were in row 50 I think she'd be paying more attention to the person in front of us. I would have to take the day off work and the program is 90 minutes long. Hmmmm....

King George and Fancy Reba

On Saturday night Scott and I went to see George Strait and Reba McEntire in concert. What a show! Reba tore it up and her encore performance of Fancy was Fab-U-lous! George is "authentic" country. On the authenticity scale I can't go much further than George or the stuff gets a little too twangy and honky tonk. I like country, but I mostly stay on the contemporary side of things. George didn't bring any frills with him--just sang for 2 hours strait (get it??). You've gotta have respect for the man. 50 number 1 hits??Country musicians continue to impress me--they sound just as good live as they do on the radio. Not many other genres can make that claim.
I ordered my Alan Jackson tickets this morning and Keith Urban tickets to go on sale April 24. Yee-Haw!

Speed Racer

While at Grammy and Papa's on Easter Evy spotted this McDonalds Race car hanging in the garage. How she spotted it I will never know. But after several requests "Car? Car? Car?" Papa got it down for her so she could race!

Moms Have Tails?

Evy had a lot of fun playing with my "tail". If you ask her where her tail is she points to her back. Funny stuff.

Honest Mistake

Evy can't quite grasp that his name is Pooh. Not Poop.

Damn the Bad Luck!

From CNN regarding the 3 deaths related to the Baja earthquake...

"The other victim died when he ran from his residence into the street and was hit by a car, said Alfredo Escobedo, Baja state's director of civil protection."

I am a horrible person. I actually laughed when I read this...

Egg Slayer

I wasn't sure if Evy would be in to egg hunting or have any idea what to do. We handed her a basket and told her to go find the 6 eggs. She knew exactly what to do and gathered up all six. Then she turned and, in her cute little voice, asked "More?"
