Tooth Fairy

I used to like the Tooth Fairy. I mean how can you dislike a mythical creature that brings you money in the middle of the night? In place of money the Tooth Fairy has brought fever, crying, waking in the middle of the night and refusing to eat to our household. It started Friday night and Ms. Cranky Pants was still at it this morning. Damn Tooth Fairy.

Take Your Daughter to Work Day

Yesterday, Evy visited mommy at work. At first she was a little shy and didn't know how to react to 20 faces looking at her. Then, she adjusted and loved the spotlight....laughing and loving every bit of attention.

Dirty Little Secret

I don't feed Evy cereal, regularly. Is that horrible? At her 4 month appointment we were told that we could start her on cereal....try it twice a day. It doesn't fit into our routine so we don't do it. She gets cereal maybe twice a week. From my understanding they don't need the cereal until month 6 so by my estimation I can be lazy about this for another month. Or, do I need to be scolded?

A Good One

A co-worker had this quote at her desk:

"Some people are like slinkys. They are really good for nothing, but bring a smile to your face as you push them down the stairs."

I'm still laughing. And, it's only funny if you can actually identify people who you would consider slinkys.

A Must Read?

One of the first "mommy-bloggers," Dooce has a book hitting shelves today (ok, just the hard copy comes out today. Paperback came out a while back). Her blog is sarcastic, crass, and to some probably offensive but I find myself laughing out loud at most of her posts. And you have to admire a woman who has found a way to support her family with her blog. You go girl!
I am excited to read her book because it describes her battle with post-partum depression and how it landed her in a mental hospital. Since I identify more with this version of parenthood than the pixie dust version I am really looking forward to the humor I'm sure to find in her pages. Has anyone else read it yet? Reviews?

New Toys

The saucer is actually a hand-me-down from Evy's cousins, but it's new to her. She wasn't quite sure what to do with all the toys within reach. The stroller was a Christmas present and Evy's not quite big enough for it, but we broke it out and took a couple of spins around the kitchen.

In other news, Evy has started rolling from her back to her tummy a couple of times a day. She hasn't perfected the maneuver just yet. Mom and Dad are fine with that since professional rolling will require a whole new level of supervision.

Happy Friday!

I hope you get a chance to kick back, put your feet up and enjoy some couch time this weekend!

Riddle Me This...

Q: What do you get when you take 9 intelligent women and ask them to play board games after 12 hours of work and childcare?

A: Ding Dongs....and I don't mean the kind made by Hostess.

How else could you explain the following statements....Motive rhymes with locomotive, The Beatles had 5 members, and the box marked CHINA---FRAGILE ends up getting knocked on the floor.

Don't even try to correlate this behavior with the adult beverages that were consumed. You cannot prove a thing.

A Day in the Life

If I've figured anything out about parenting it's that as soon as I think I know Evy's likes and dislikes they change. So, here's a snapshot of where we are today. Check back tomorrow, things will have probably changed.

LIKES: Fingers, being carried around by mom and dad, TV, baths, music and pina coladas.

DISLIKES: Sleeping at daycare, rice cereal, tummy time, the nose syringe and yoga.

What's Your Secret?

I know that I am not unique in the fact that I am a mom and I hold down a full time job outside of the home. I also assume that I'm not alone in feeling overwhelmed by the demands that life brings. Scott and I have realized that we have been approaching life as one big to-do list (work, dishes, groceries, laundry, meal prep, baby care....) and that approach has sucked the fun right out of things. It could be the weather, Scott being sick and Evy's bad mood that has amplified this fact in the last couple of weeks. What's your secret to making it all work? Does your family have a traditional fun-booster that you look forward to each week? Have you identified a way to cut down on your to-do list? Or, are you just all on Prozac?

Man Down

Last weekend we were babying Evy with her severe diaper rash. Of course, it started on Friday night. This weekend we have a big baby needing care; Scott. He started getting sick on Friday night and hasn't spent much time off the couch since then. Since the real baby requires a lot of attention Scott has mostly had to fend for himself. We had plans to attend a Nickleback concert this weekend but that didn't happen. Luckily, my parents rolled into town for a few hours today and offered some back up. The most important thing is that I was able to make it to Banana Republic to spend my 30% off coupon. Priorities!

Silly

My friend, BMH once pointed out the ridiculousness of ordering a Diet Coke to go along with your McDonalds Value Meal. I remembered this and laughed to myself as I placed my order for a Quarter Pounder with Cheese, Fries, and Diet Coke last night. As if ordering a Diet Coke demonstrates than I'm still managing my caloric intake. I'm thinking there should be a threshold. For example: if the meal you're eating is over 1200 calories just get the regular Coke and stop fooling yourself.

Speed Dry

Since Friday, Evy has been suffering from a very bad diaper rash. The poor little thing is red and swollen. To help ease her pain she has been bathed in baking soda several times a day and allowed to roll around naked to help air out her parts. We've also been very careful about making sure she is dry before putting a diaper on. I had to leave early this morning to make it to work in time for a meeting. When I left the house she was soaking in the tub. Scott called later to tell me he had used the hair dryer on her to make sure she was dry. My first question, "you changed the setting to cool, right?"

Nearly Naked Mile

The organization I work for sponsored the Nearly Naked Mile on Saturday. The idea is that just before the run you strip down to your undies and donate the clothes off your back to the Salvation Army. My donated clothes arrived in a bag & I ran the mile fully clothed. It was raining which made the costumes of other participants even funnier. One hairy guy in flesh colored spandex shorts. Two guys in shower caps & bath towels. One guy in XS gym shorts who augmented his "assets" with tube socks.

My Girl

I haven't posted recent pics for awhile so I thought I better give you your Evy fix before the grandma's go on strike from my blog.

Hello Library

I got a library card! Why the excitement, you ask? I am not a reader. I don't have the patience to sit still long enough to read. There's always something more productive (or unproductive) I can think of to do with my time. But, I want to be a reader and I want to "want to" relax and read a book. So, I'm trying! My friend LH recommended Cider House Rules by John Irving to another friend so I decided to start with that one. I'm 40 pages into it and am enjoying it. I even chose to read last night over watching the 2nd round of The Bachelor ridiculousness. The book is due back in 3 weeks and that's just the kind of pressure I need to make sure I read the book. What should I read next?

Slippery Slope

I am afraid the descent into "mom wear" has begun. Sign one: I was wearing a "track suit" around the house on Saturday night. Sign two: the first thing I do when I get home is change into comfy clothes. This is ususally some conglomeration involving an oversized shirt and elastic waist pants. Sign three: last night I purchased athletic wear, which I have no intention of wearing during an athletic activity. Oh crap, by my estimate I'm about a week away from mom-jeans, canvas shoes, and a perm.

What's Cookin'?

In Scott's family it is tradition to have orange rolls for special occasions. I don't bake. So, Scott thought we should get a lesson from his mom so that we can continue the orange roll tradition for many generations. Today, we got our lesson. But, wouldn't you know...Evy required a lot of attention today (actually she was an angel, but it sounded like a good excuse to me) so mostly, it was just Scott and his mom in the kitchen. I guess Scott will have to be the party responsible for carrying on this tradition. I'll be happy to help eat them, however.
