Our Little Con Artist
I'm coming off of four days of parenting that have me at my wits' end. Evy cannot seem to eat meals on her own, use the bathroom on her own, retrieve toys on her own and a multitude of other things that she cannot (will not) do on her own. I had an appointment tonight with Evy's teacher for a regular parent-teacher conference and literally left the house without saying goodbye to Scott or the girls because I was so "over" the poor behavior. You can imagine my surprise in hearing the teacher say "I see nothing in Evy that concerns me on any level. She is a very intelligent little lady and is one of the most independent children in the room. She uses the bathroom on her own, puts her shoes on herself, can be paired with any child in the room because she gets along with everyone, she feeds herself at lunch with no problem, and does not sass back to teachers." I nearly fell off my chair when she used the word independent to describe Evy. It makes me very happy to hear that Evy behaves well for her teachers. It has affirmed the fact that she can do things by herself but chooses not to do them at home. Little con artist.

Can we co-miserate? I've been blaming it on surgery...but it's just another *&^%#*(%*#**% STAGE!
I found myself saying, "do you put your own shoes on at school? Then you better practice because you're going back next week!".
Parenting is the hardest job ever!
You're not alone and these kids are lucky they are cute and smart and we made them....or else!
I'm in shock and awe reading this post tonight! We are in the same boat, AGAIN! In some ways, it makes me feel better, so thanks!
Do our girls know eachother somehow?
Parents are always the ones to experience the worst behavior!!
I hear the same thing at school about Madison but am dealing with the same issues at home! Madison is in kindergarten and we are still battling it!!! Good luck!!!
I've read a lot that kids that are devils at home oftentimes are angels at school. If that's any consolation. Just use it to tell yourself that at least you're not alone. :)
Evy reminds me a lot of Laina. Your mom is definitely right--parents experience the worst behavior! Even at 6 years old Laina wants constant attention. She has never been one to play by herself.
Emily, My sister dealt with this as well. Their family doctor gave good insight. Their child was spending all day long being "good" and being independent, by the time he came home at night he was exhausted and needed to let down. Idea that they were getting the bad behavior because he felt safe enough at home to let go a bit...
Yes, the homefront is the laboratory where our little Mad Scientists plot their evil experiments, test the boundaries of right/wrong, and learn what to take forward into the world. Judging from the conference, it sounds like Evy is getting the right lessons and figuring it all out. But it is exhausting and HARD on the parents, for sure, and we've all been there. Are there.
Amen! Wishing you were working full time again? Through gritted teeth, last night Caleb announced that he was going to kill Jacob. My response: Not if I do it first. I'm finding my new best friend is a glass of Chardonnay. And, no, 10 AM is not to early for a sip :)Hang in there. I know I am!
