When I came home from school I could tell something was wrong. Blotches of the garage floor were stained dark red. My mom was acting strange. Sitting in the burnt-orange chair, I learned that my cat Grover was dead from a run-in with the car. That night, we drove the Oldsmobile out into the country and my dad showed us where he buried Grover.
A week later, around Easter, I was sitting in the garage watching my dad tinker with something at his workbench. I saw a bloodied, mangy Grover walking into the garage. "OH MY GOD! MY CAT IS ALIVE?!" Hysterics followed.
This is one of the most interesting stories from my childhood. Grover had been hurt in the car accident and ran off. He did not die, but my parents assumed he would die so they decided to lie. They had a lot of explaining to do when the "dead" cat walked into the garage. We took Grover to the vet where one of his legs was amputated and our 3-legged cat lived happily ever after. Well, until he had used up his 9th life.
Moral of the story: Make sure all of the loose ends are tied down before you lie to your kids.

That is a great story Emily! Wow...I bet you really loved that cat. And how did your mother explain that one? Lol!
This is an Easter story of Biblical proportion. The "supposed" burial site (tomb if you wish) was revealed to the two young children in proof of the death of poor little Grover. Grover was (supposedly) buried and resurrected 3 days later, returning to the Syfert home on Easter morning. It was soon decided that a miracle of such warranted a trip to the vet for a few minor repairs.
It was only a small white lie trying to protect the innocent children?

My whole family is sitting here in Wisconsin laughing!
Jake, you're a crack up! Truly a disciple of God
I remember Grover but don't recall the burial scenario! That is pretty funny! The picture of you and your sweet little brother you love and adore, is how I will always remember you kids. Cute pictures, even of old 3-legged Grover!! Aunt Susie >^..^< P.S. I believe there were several cats named Grover, female and male!
I almost forgot, I see another small white lie with the word "innocent" included in Dad's story !!! >^..^<
GREAT story...and let me tell you how much I dig the McGruff sign in the window! Love it.
I can't help but wonder why Caleb is sitting in a laundry basket in the front yard. Weird!
Wow, I remember that. Which cat had the litter that Simon came from? I swear you had Grover from when we were babies until college. Brandy
