Sorry folks, this is going to be a boring post. I need advice. I prepare a 6 ounce bottle of formula. Evy decides she only wants 3 ounces this time. Is it ok to refrigerate the remaining 3 ounces and use them at the next feeding? The can says no, but I'm in marketing so I know how this works...they want to sell more. I want to buy less. What do you think?
I realize I could make a smaller bottle and then make more if needed, but that's not really my question in this instance.

When Jacob was in the NICU, the nurses said that the baby's saliva breaks down the proteins in the formula which is why you can't reuse a formula bottle once a baby drinks from it (same thing with breast milk bottles). Or maybe that is what the formula companies tell the nurses to tell the patients so they buy more formula... personally, i wouldn't chance my baby's health to spare a few scoops of formula. just my opinion.
Emily,
I honestly think that it is fine to use it for the next feeding (in the same day). Something you will notice once you start feeding solid food (fruits and veggies): if you feed from the container and then store it for the next feeding, the food does get watery for the very reason Morgan said. I can't imagine there would be too much backwash through a bottle nipple but I suppose you never know.
I have a baby that doesn't like to eat and didn't want to grow in the beginning. Our pediatrician said, always offer her more than she will eat and then just refrigerate the leftovers - use them within 24 hours. I have done that with breastmilk and formula and she is just fine....save yourself some time and money!
hmmm...first there was the yogurt that goes back into the fridge for Scott...now formula that goes back into the fridge for Evy...I'm starting to see a trend here. Does everything magically get better when it goes back into the fridge, Emily?? I'm going to have second thoughts the next time you offer me a dairy product from your fridge ;) Just kidding - good luck finding out the answer.
Yep, they tell you it breaks down the protein in the formula. But, I am telling you at daycare if they don't finish a bottle it usually goes back in the fridge and is offered again later. I usually found if I put it in the fridge it was too cold for the kid later (because we are non-warmers). And, like everything this will be short lived, before you know it she will be downing the whole thing. Do whatever is easiest for you...Evy will survive!
My God, are you daft?! Never, EVER feed a baby leftover formula? Heavens. I mean, really....
Poor Emily! What to do with all this differing advice!
I'm glad you asked - I was wondering this exact thing as Veda won't finish her bottles these days. I have been dumping them but now I think I will try to reserve - formula is too expensive. I've even tried a small bottle and then if she acts like she wants more I'll go make another ounce at a time - too much work!
YES, IT IS JUST FINE. I DID IT ALL THE TIME WHEN MY CHILDREN WERE BABIES.
